This was our first time traveling to IU for a football game and didn't know what to expect. After a 11 hr. drive and being tired and stiff from the long ride we were quite excited to finely reach the Summerhouse Inn. My dealings over the phone with the friendly staff, especially "Erica, and Rebecka" were really justified after meeting them in person. We were there for 4 days, first 2 were sunny and beautiful, next 2 were rainy and ugly. The time spent at the inn was very, very pleasent. The grounds were "very, very" nice and sitting out at nite was a real treat (weather permitting). Now for the rooms! Our room was old,"Erica explained this to me already-no surprise) But other than that was very nice and comfortable. Room was very clean and everything worked perfect. So the next time we visit Bloomington we will be sure to stay again at the Summerhouse Inn. The price you pay and what you get---The Staff, The Grounds, The room, The All Day Breakfast really can't be matched. The Summerhouse Inn will see us again!!!!!!!!!! To The Staff----Thanks for a GREAT Stay
Apparently when Bloomington (IU) has an event, there are not enough rooms available for the masses so the local hoteliers will raise there rates to gouging heights. I was able to secure a room at the Summertime Inn for 2 nights in late Sept., for Freshman family day. There was a bass tournament as well because the parking lot was full of high powered bass boats. Only Americans can make fishing a competitive sport, lol. Arriving at bthe property, the front end/ office looked cheery, bright and inn like. The large motel behind looked like a 50's 2 story motel barracks. I asked the friendly desk clerk the difference between an 'Inn' and a motel and she jokingly replied that 'Inn' sounds fancier. The good. The $65 room was only $100/night vs $250/night for lower end brand names. Large room, comfy clean bed, decent bathroom. The bad. Smelled like Swamp thing had lived there. The air was so thick with must/mold you could chew it. My wife suffers from breathing issues. Don't know if it's like that all the time. The friendly staff offered to move us, but on further questioning agreed the result would be no different. One guest complained of mold on the shower curtain. The small, convex screened TV wouldn't have been out of place in the 60's. The breakfast was decent if you like carbs and sugared kiddy cereals. The bagels and cream cheese satisfied. The room had Maxwell House coffee bags. No pretense (or flavor) there. Actually, this was in keeping with the '50's feel.... No ugly though! Seriously, if the air had smelled better, I would have said 'decent' for the money, considering.
I have read some good reviews and some bad reviews about this place. I found it to be neither. It is older. The room was clean. Not much on the walls as it appeared to have been renovated recently. Bathroom was older, and I did not use the shower. TV was older (not a flat screen), but worked OK. Cable was available. Breakfast was OK but no great shakes. A lot of sportsmen with boats stay here. It was not awful, old and dirty as described by some, and it was not pleasant with character as described by others. I'd rather be at a nicer hotel, but I can easily stay here again if necessary. Have to remember that you're paying a lot less here than a lot of other hotels or motels. Inexpensive and functional.
We stayed here for a baseball tournament and this place, sad to say, was awful! I don't usually write reviews but I felt this visit needed one! Our room was very old and in awful condition! The beds were tiny, the blankets on the bed were very old and stained, and the pillows were small and lumpy. We slept horrible! The shower had hair in it and there was no hot water for along time. I would never stay in these rooms again! The only positive thing was, they had a great campfire site with a wonderful campfire going. If we could've slept out by the campfire, that would have been great but we had to go back to the disgusting room! The breakfast was minimal but the staff was very nice!
The room is older, so the carpet wasn't great, the shower curtain wasn't very nice, the bed was a little broken down, and the door wouldn't close all of the way. The air worked very well, and was no more noisy than every other place I've stayed. This isn't a four star room. However, the staff was awesome, and the breakfast was nice. As long as you don't pay much, it is adequate for a place to sleep and move on.
This place has been around for a while, but it was clan, quiet, the public room was comfortable and pleasant. I can't really explain why, but I liked this place-- it was homey. The Orange Juice and milk come out of a refrigerator, not a machine, for instance.
The room I stayed in was in poor repair (damaged siding throughout, worn and stained carpeting, and broken sill on the bottom of the door). And the air-con unit was noisy, making it difficult at best to sleep. These are all things that slightly attentive management should be able to fix. Otherwise, the breakfast was good and the staff friendly.
This hotel was very nice and I was pleased with the cleanliness, service, grounds, and breakfast The lobby was so inviting and the staff was very helpful and friendly. My room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Yes, the hotel is "old", however it was very well kept and had character. If I needed anything, the staff went out of their way to help. The breakfast was VERY good and there was plenty to choose from. The lobby and breakfast area was clean and bright, and I enjoyed looking at the historical memorabilia. I enjoyed my stay and would stay there again.
I recently stayed at a summerhouse inn, and found it was a good value with excellent service. My family and I stayed there, and enjoyed the modest but clean rooms. We also enjoyed the fire pit and the simple but adequate breakfast. The property is an older property, but well worth the privacy it gave us and the staff was very helpful.. I plan on stayin there again the next time I'm in town.
I didn't care that this place was old and shabby, I really didn't. The mattress was fantastic, and one of the four pillows on my king bed was pretty darn comfortable. I honestly didn't care about anything else. Until I came back at 10 at night after a long day of work and found it raining in my bathroom. After about an hour of futzing around, they moved me to another room. I had to ask for someone to come help w/my luggage, and they required me to come by the office to pick up another key. It was late, snowing, slippery, and cold. My new room had a leaky tub. But the mattress was also good. I took the pillow from room 1 to room 2, just in case, and was glad I did. Other comments - breakfast was ample. It was my first encounter with margarine in a squeeze-bottle, though.
