I had to go to St. Thomas on short notice needed a reasonable priced place to stay. Bluebeards Castle had among the best rates. Getting to the hotel is bit of a task. First off we drive on the left (just like the British) so pay attention or you might end up in a head on collision with a concrete truck (yes we have those). The road going up to the hillside hotel are very narrow and badly on need of resurfacing. Pay attention to the signs or you will miss the turn to the lobby and end up back at entrance at the bottom of the hill. The staff was very friendly and efficient and had me checked in less than 10 minutes. The fact that I arrived at almost 10 pm was probably a factor. The flights from the mainland start arriving after 1 pm so you can probably expect longer check-in time if you arrive between 3 and 5 pm. The room, which was a Pirates Pension, appeared clean and spacious. It included a small refrigerator, small electric stove, sink, microwave and apartment size washer and dryer. Be sure to let the hotel know if you have physical disabilities. Each building is multilevel and there is no elevator. My room was three flights down. The room had a sliding glass door that opened onto a balcony which provided a very nice view of the harbor and the cruise ship dock. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. If I might digress for a moment, there is a misconception regarding “tropical breezes”. If you are staying on the south side of the island (like I was) and winds are blowing out of the north, you are not going to feel any. You will be glad for that air conditioner. There is convenience store near the lobby however which you get to by stairs. On the way to the hotel I normally buy staples like water, juice, beer and snacks to you keep the room. Now for the down side. Even though the room appeared clean there were obvious signs of wear and tear. The coffee table and dresser were badly on need of refinishing or replacement and one of the dining chairs had ripped upholstery. The bathroom was clean, but it was clear that it was in need of refurbishing. The caulking around the tub and fixtures appeared hastily and sloppily done. Overall the hotel was adequate. It provides clean accommodations for the short term traveler or vacationers on a budget.
Bluebeard's Castle is a unique resort with a mix of history, beauty, modern convenience and comforts in an outstanding location East of Charlotte Amalie. The recent renovations and upgrades are to a high standard with great finishes (with the exception of the bathroom which was a bit older). Hilltop II has fantastic views of the harbour and downtown Charlotte Amalie, our unit was immaculately clean with a small "full kitchen" in the studio apartment with a separate bathroom. The bed was very comfortable, though be warned the mattresses are very soft. All furnishings were new and the in room AC was great. Note there is a hefty utilities charge of US$85 a week for a studio apartment, but remember the AC is always on, and the resort is converting to Solar Power. My biggest complains are thus, the lack of signage put up by contractors when they were paving by Hilltop I, and the cockerels, whic are fed by the groundskeepng staff, making a lot of noise at dawn (between 3 and 5am depending on the weather)! Otherwise our stay was hassle free, the location is great for its convenience as well, it's close to downtown and to Yacht Haven, Port of Sale, and Havensight. It's cheaper to find a Vitran truck than to take a taxi though and there are no shuttles operated by the hotel - factor in this extra cost if you do not have a hire car. I would certainly return to Bluebeard's, it's certainly a family friendly resort and great for couples too.
This resort has a beautiful view, no beach, it was nice to wake up and see different cruise ships docked in the morning. It would be nice to have more dining options, the pool bar was always a nice "go to" for a quick meal. A rental car is a must unless you want to spend lots of cash on taxis; the hotel concierge was very helpful and nice in scheduling off-site excursions.
I recently stayed at this hotel and you need to know that the staff is stealing . I booked a trip to the British Virgin Islands through the hotel Concierge Desk and it so happens that when I came back I found that all my gold jewelry was stolen . I contacted the the Front Desk and they sent down Security to take a report . I was told that I could file a report with the local police department which I did . They came and again took another report . No one ever contacted me regarding the status or finding . I was told by a couple staying in the next room that the housekeeper was in our room for quite a long time and that a cab driver was seen at our door . The hotel management never bothered to question them nor did the police department . My room was only cleaned that one time in the week I stayed , no one else had access to our room and certainly the Concierge knew I would be gone all day , giving them plenty of time to do their deed . Here;s how they do it , you book a trip with the Concierge who knows that you're going to be out all day , she in turns tells the maid who checks out your suitcase and takes whatever she find valuable then the maid calls the cabby who takes it off her hands so she's never seen with anything when she leaves for the day . I was told by a very reliable source that this is how they always operate . They had a safe in my room but there was no lock , I was told I had to go to the Front Desk and get the lock , this was after the fact . In all the information in their " Welcome Package " nothing , absolutely nothing , was written about how to go about getting the lock for the safe , I simply thought it was broken and since the housekeeper was coming just once a week I was safe . You need to understand that I had my jewelry hidden deep in my suitcase and tucked away and not out in the open , she had to dig real hard to find it . The most appalling thing about this was their attitude . I'm still waiting for a " We're so sorry this happened " . This is not over . I will use every possible form of social media to expose them . This is just plain wrong !
Our weeklong stay at Bluebeard's was very enjoyable. We spent three nights at Pirate's Pension with a wonderful view of the Havenstock area (southern) and the last four nights at Villas II with a breathtaking western view of Charlotte-Amalie at night. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed. The cleaning schedule is odd, but not a problem. Rooms could be updated with a little more Caribbean color! The onsite restaurants were terrific and run by exceptional staff! We'd return to Bluebeard's if we had a chance!
Based on other reviews, mostly on our time share trading company website, we were not expecting a lot from Bluebeards Castle. Overall, we had a very good experience. As mentioned by a lot of people, the views from the rooms are almost stunning of the harbor, cruise ships and outlying islands. We stayed in the Hilltop Villas II and had a studio room that we found to be comfortable. The room was really not much more than a hotel room, except it had a mini-kitchen including a full size fridge/freezer. There was only a small microwave and a plug in 2 burner stove apparatus, but we didn't really care about that as we ate all but our breakfasts out. We ate one breakfast at the pool bar as recommended by others, and also found it to be quite good and reasonable. We ate dinner twice at their Room With a View restaurant and enjoyed it a lot both times. At first glance it seems pretty pricey, but actually compared to other restaurants in the area it turned out to be pretty reasonable, particularly since the portions were good size and the meals automatically included a salad, which was $5-$10 extra every where else we went. We did not use the pool/spa since it was quite a hike up to the pool area from our unit., but they looked good. My wife used their exercise room daily, said it was small but adequate.
When my children and I arrived at Bluebeards Castle for check in, they couldn't find our reservation.I did book through American Airlines Vacation so I'm not sure who was at fault for this. Even though I had my hotel voucher in my hand, the lady at the front desk told me I had to call AA vacations so they could e-mail the information. The first 3 phone calls did not go through so I was given a different number by the lady at the desk. When I called they said they had nothing to do with my trip and could not help. Finally I called original number and got through. After several try's the e-mail went through. It was the same voucher that I had in my hand. When my children and I finally went to our room we could not open the door. Someone had called maintenance. After about a half hour, I sent my kids to the pool. They finally fixed one of the two doors to our room. After a very long day I went to use the water that night and all they water in the bathroom and kitchen were off. It was honestly off for only about an hour but still annoying. The second night we were there the power shut off for a few minutes. When we came home I contacted Bluebeards Castle and was told that the water being shut of and the power was because of the rain. True it did rain on and off during our trip, but not when these things happened. The manager was also not very concerned over any inconvenience we suffered at the hotel.
I really liked the hotel it was clean and very historic there is a lovley restaurant located inside the hotel that has the best amazing lobster bisque have ever tasted and a large selection of wine...I didn't like the location its a far walk from everything but other than that it was a nice hotel
I've stayed at BC a few times. The promotion price is very attractive and my room was attractive and comfortable, but I had two problems on this visit - (1) the bed/mattress in Rm. 158 was hard as a brick - I managed to sleep, but it was far less than comfortable or inviting. (2) The cable TV went out (half the channels) went out on 3 of the 4 days/evenings during my stay. The staff said that men were working on the problems (for 3 days?), but the bottom line was that I didn't have the TV that I wanted during my stay. That's pretty basic. So, I would probably go back, but I would not want this experience again. Other stays have not had these problems.
