A Xaraes e excelente.

We spent 5 days at the Lodge. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about the Pantanal and other attractions in the area. Our guide Raphael (abley assissted by Max) was enthusiastic and eagle-eyed and made sure we saw a good range of birds and mammals. The chief bonus of our time at the lodge was the array of activities provided. We went fishing, canoeing, walking through forest, night and day trips by bus, sunrise tours and horseback safari the variety helped us see more animals and meant there was always something new to look forward to the next day. The staffs´ love of the Pantanal is clear and they are keen to give you the best experience possible, from information during tours to getting you out from dinner to spot an armadillo in the garden. There´s a tour in the morning and one in the afternoon/evening. At first we thought we´d get bored hanging around in the day waiting for our next trip but it´s far too hot (in December) to do much around midday anyway so in the end we were glad of the break. The rooms are simple but fine and kept clean, though you might be joined by the odd frog. Wearing long trousers and shirt is recommended (despite the heat) to minimise mosquito bites, and maybe take a raincoat too. Xaraes lodge made visiting the Pantanal one of the highlights of our Brazil trip and I recommend them without hesitation.

After experiencing various delays during our trip in South America, we were running out of time as we crossed the border from Bolivia to Corumba in Brazil - days later than scheduled. So, while we'd hoped to spend a day or two shopping around in Corumba for a trip to a Pantanal lodge, we decided to book in advance from Bolivia and cut out the stop-over in Corumba. But, we were surprised by how difficult it was to find somewhere to book online - especially as we hoped to organise onward travel to Bonito on a day when public transport was not running. (Sunday, I think..) Xaraes was the only lodge that replied to our emails in time, providing plenty of travel options for us to choose from, and had some (limited) information/reviews online to give us the confidence to book. It was a bit above our backpacker's budget, and we expect we could have found somewhere within budget at Corumba, but we decided to go for it anyway to save hanging around any longer. Best decision of the trip. This place was one of, if not THE best place we stayed during our six month trip. Yes it's not five-star hotel luxury. But this is a farm. As farms go, though, this one is pretty swish. The staff, the food, the rooms, the pool, the surroundings... everything was wonderful on what is a undoubtedly a genuine Pantanal cattle farm. The dedicated staff, especially lovely Olivia and Sebastian, went above and beyond to ensure we got the most out of our three day stay - which included two excursions per day, plus three yummy home-made meals a day. The trips they planned for us included hiking, canoeing, a night safari in a 4x4, and another one in a boat, and piranha fishing. On one day we also went on a very gentle three-hour horse ride. That's when we got to see just how vast the farm is as we rode through the woods, and through the partially-flooded plains. The staff also arranged for us to have a lovely Brazilian barbecue lunch at the farm house, before a jeep ride back to the lodge. There was a perfect balance of downtime to enjoy the lodge (where we could easily spot plenty of capybara's, armadillos, hundreds of birds including macaws and toucans) and the twice-daily trips to see loads more. Although it was very quiet when we stayed in June this year, I imagine it is more than able to cope with full capacity and still feel spacious and relaxing. The region was also flooded when we came, which was not a problem. Olivia arranged for a taxi to collect us from the Brazilian border, which drove us as far as the road was clear, before transferring us to a little boat which took us the remainder of the way to the lodge. To be honest, this boat ride was actually a highlight. The Pantanal is stunning and experiencing it from the water in a high-speed boat was so much fun. (The taxi driver also helped us avoid being bribed by immigration officials as we left Bolivia.) I could not recommend the Pantanal enough for anyone who loves nature, as there's so much wildlife to see, and everyone at Xaraes will definitely enjoy showing it off to you. Olivia also gave us loads of help and advice for our onward travel in Brazil - helping us to book trips in Bonito and staying in touch to make sure we made it there ok.

I spent 6 days with my husband, and 2 kids (5 and 8). We had already been to pantanal 5 times at different farms, so we knew what to expect. The lodge is a genunine Pantanal Cattle Farm with preserved areas. We were able to see some mammals and LOTS of birds. But do not expeçt a game reserve since the animals are absolutely free Nd not monitored. The owners of the lodge, Olivia and Joao, are very attentious. The activitis included land a d river safaris, trails, canooing horsebackriding and fishing. The guides did everything possible for kids to repeat twice the activities they enjoyed! The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable and with air conditioning. The kitchen and food are the lows... although the food was good the menu was almost always the same with a small variety. Pantanal dishes were not served once and the meat was of low quality. Many times some items were not available, such as bread during breakfast... Showing a bad management of the kitchen activities. Any special treats (chocolates, cookies...) shall be taken from home since it is not possible to buy them at the lodge. Besides the kitchen the experience was great!

We travelled to this pousada off season. As part of a long long trip we were in the south east of Bolivia and decided that firstly, we would like to travel somewhere by train and secondly, that as the Pantanal is ordinarily difficult to get to a 1000km journey really wasn't that far. We found the pousada on the internet alongside a lot of other information about the likelihood of seeing various different types of wildlife depending on the season, the weather, conditions etc. We knew there was a possibility of difficult travel as we were just the wrong side of the end of the rainy season (the pantanal is a swamp!) and that the environment is difficult- there are lots and lots of mosquitoes (again- it is a swamp) and that we were extremely unlikely to see big cats (totally the wrong season- although our guide had seen one a couple of weeks before). The whole experience from booking to leaving was superb. Our taxi driver from the Bolivian border was lovely to the extent of lending us some cash because the cash machines in town were not working and we needed some lunch (take cash- this is a common problem with international cards). Olivia, João and all the guides are excellent. We felt welcomed, cared for and looked after the whole time. Included in the cost of full board are two excursions a day tailored to your interests. The owners have been involved in various ecological and wildlife projects including re-homeing trafficked birds. The individual lodge type accommodation is large, clean, has great bathrooms. The swimming pool is a great place to watch birds and capibara (and turns into a jaccuzi). My strongest recommendations are as follows: know what the Pantanal is like in the season you intend to visit and prepare accordingly. This is wild nature and not a beach holiday. Take masses of insect repellent, anti-histamines, sun tan lotion and a big, big hat. Do not let the conditions put you off. This was one of the best experiences I have had and a memory that will stay with me for a long time. In large part this was due to our hosts. The food was traditional brazilian fare- fresh cheeses, homemade desserts, great, great meat and a big breakfast (lots of fruit, cake, ham, cheese, warm bread, fresh butter, honey, yogurt etc etc.) And i discovered a love for bird watching that I never knew I had- I saw over 40 different types. Overall a wonderful experience that I couldn't recommend enough.
